Several wonderful communities make up southern Denton County: Lewisville, Highland Village, Flower Mound and The Colony. All of these communities enjoy a very quick commute to DFW Airport, and many airline employees choose to live in southern Denton County. Highland Village is an incorporated township (1963) within the boundaries of Lewisville. In the 50’s and 60’s it was a retreat for city dwellers of Dallas, who wanted a lake house to escape to. The town sponsors the Highland Village Balloon Festival every August, which is gaining in popularity and rivaling the festival in Albuquerque. Highland Village is serviced by the Lewisville ISD, with currently high ranking schools. Flower Mound is adjacent to Lewisville on the east and borders Highland Village on the north, and is home to 74,000 residents. Well regarded for its family-oriented residential areas, it was voted #1 “Best Cities for Families” and #7 “Safest Cities in the US”. Flower Mound has a wonderful Community Activity Center, with something for everyone, from kids aquatics in the pool and Water Park, to senior’s group exercise classes. Flower Mound is home to several equestrian centers, and horses are permitted in some subdivisions with acreage lots. There are two public golf courses in Flower Mound, Tour 18 and Bridlewood. The town is just minutes to DFW Airport. The average home price in Flower Mound is currently $455k and is rising.
The Colony was developed and incorporated in 1977, originally offering smaller, affordable tract homes for people who wanted to get out of the city. Today, The Colony is inhabited by 41,000 people from all walks of life, who enjoy the 23 miles of shoreline along the eastern shore of Lake Lewisville. It is a wonderful place for the athletic family, in addition to water activities the lake provides, it is also has the Five Star Athletic Complex, TopGolf and Blue Sky Indoor Soccer. The Colony today is a vibrant community and home to the new Nebraska Furniture Mart, the country’s largest home furnishing retail store. NFM is expected to bring 6-8 million visitors annually to The Colony, and has provided thousands of jobs for its residents. The town is located 35 miles north of Downtown Dallas and 25 miles from DFW Airport. The median home price in The Colony is a very affordable $231,800.
Lewisville boasts a historic downtown of charming shops and businesses, and is bordered on the north by Lake Lewisville, the largest lake in the DFW area at 29,000 acres. The lake has 233 miles of shoreline, some of which is in Lewisville, and is also in Highland Village and The Colony in the southern portion of the lake. Lewisville is known as the “Urban Bass Fishing Capital of Texas” as large bass tournaments are frequently sponsored on the lake. Lewisville also has several golf courses and the Hank Haney Golf Ranch. Every year in September, Lewisville puts on the Western Days Festival and the crowds come for a little bit of country and the nostalgia of the Old West, and the world’s biggest Tamale Eating Contest!
